Defence / Army

The Autogyro is well suited for Army tasking. Its long endurance and ability to fly low and slow, its safety profile and easy handling characteristics combined with the low investment and operating costs and its low CO2 and noise footprint make it a perfect aircraft for various Land operations.

The ground forces are always in need of sufficient air support like reconnaissance or Close Air Support, but they rarely get the numbers they require. The cost of helicopters and fighters make them a scarce asset. For some of these (combat) supportive tasks the Autogyro (with the right equipment) can be a good alternative.

What about using the Autogyro with the right sensor to recce roads in Afghanistan before the convoy passes over the road? The endurance of the Autogyro (5 hours) and its ability to stay outside the threat band of small arms fire provides an operational means at a fraction of the normal costs.

Also training of units in the use of their Forward Air Controllers does no longer require expensive and scarce helicopters. Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) Autogyro’s allows Force Protection to be brought to a higher level (eyes and ears in the sky). The use of an Autogyro with sensor for Surveillance and Recce does make sense. Liaison/Ordonance can benefit from the ability for longer lines of communication and Aerial relay is also an option.
